A BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure) machine gives two pressures: a higher one when the patient breathes in (IPAP) and a lower one when they breathe out (EPAP). It is used for COPD, obesity hypoventilation, neuromuscular disease, and for sleep apnea patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. BiPAP settings must come from the doctor, so this guide focuses on matching the machine to the prescription.

BiPAP modes explained
- S (spontaneous): the machine follows the patient’s own breathing.
- ST (spontaneous/timed): adds a backup breath rate, so the machine gives a breath if the patient does not breathe in time. Often prescribed for COPD and hypoventilation.
- Auto bilevel (for example ResMed VAuto): adjusts both pressures automatically, mainly for sleep apnea patients who need more than CPAP.
- iVAPS and similar modes: adjust support to reach a target ventilation. Available on machines such as the ResMed Lumis 150.
What to check before you buy
Mode and pressure
The machine must offer the prescribed mode, and its maximum pressure must cover the prescribed IPAP. Our BiPAP machines go up to 25 or 30 cmH2O.
Mask
A well-fitting full face mask is common for BiPAP. Leaks reduce the support the patient receives.
Humidifier
A heated humidifier makes long hours of use more comfortable, especially in air-conditioned rooms.
Oxygen
Some patients use oxygen with BiPAP. Your doctor will say if this is needed and how to connect it. We supply concentrators and cylinders.
Power backup
For patients who depend on BiPAP, use a stabiliser and an IPS, and plan what to do in a long power cut.
