A medical oxygen cylinder is often the first piece of equipment a family needs when a patient comes home from hospital. It works without electricity, which matters during load-shedding, and it can be refilled again and again. This guide explains what to look for, what it costs in Bangladesh, and when renting makes more sense than buying.
In short
- Ask the doctor for the flow rate (litres per minute) and the hours per day the patient needs oxygen. That decides the cylinder size.
- You need a medical regulator with a flowmeter, a humidifier bottle and a nasal cannula or mask, not just the cylinder.
- For oxygen all day, every day, an oxygen concentrator is usually cheaper to run. Keep a cylinder as backup for power cuts.
Cylinder or concentrator?
A cylinder stores compressed oxygen and runs out, so it needs refilling. A concentrator makes oxygen from room air and runs on electricity, so it never runs out while the power is on. Many families in Bangladesh keep both: a concentrator for daily use and a cylinder for power cuts, emergencies and travel to the doctor.
What to check before you buy
1. Size and how long it lasts
How long a cylinder lasts depends on its size and the flow rate. At a higher flow it empties faster. As a rough guide, a cylinder that lasts around 10 hours at 1 litre per minute lasts around 5 hours at 2 litres per minute. Tell us the prescribed flow and the hours per day, and we will suggest the right size and tell you how often you will need a refill.
2. Regulator and flowmeter
The regulator reduces the high pressure in the cylinder and the flowmeter lets you set the flow in litres per minute. Check that the regulator fits the cylinder valve, has a clear pressure gauge, and that the flowmeter reads in the range your doctor prescribed.
3. Humidifier bottle, cannula and mask
A humidifier bottle filled with clean or distilled water adds moisture to the oxygen and helps stop the nose and throat drying out. Use the nasal cannula or mask the doctor advises, and replace them regularly.
4. Steel or aluminium
Steel cylinders are strong and common for home use. Aluminium cylinders are lighter, which makes them better for travel and hospital visits.
5. Valve, test date and trolley
Check the valve is clean and not damaged, and ask about the cylinder’s last test date. A trolley or stand keeps the cylinder upright and safe.
