A hospital bed makes home care safer for the patient and much easier for the family or carer. It lets the patient sit up to eat, breathe and talk, and it protects the carer’s back during washing, changing and turning. Here is how to choose the right one.

- For short recovery at home, a two-function manual bed is usually enough.
- If a carer will turn and wash the patient often, height adjustment (three-crank or electric) protects their back.
- For a patient who is bedbound for months, an electric ICU bed and a good mattress help prevent bed sores.
Types of hospital bed
- Two-function manual bed: two cranks raise the back and the knees. Suits recovery after surgery, a fracture or illness. See the two-function bed with mattress.
- Three-crank manual bed: adds bed height, which makes transfers and care easier for the carer.
- Electric ICU bed: the back, knees and height move with a remote handset. Best for long-term bedbound patients and ICU-style care at home.
What to check before you buy
Side rails
Side rails stop the patient rolling out of bed. Check they lock firmly and fold down for care.
Castor wheels and brakes
Wheels let you move the bed for cleaning. Brakes must lock all four wheels.
Mattress
A hospital bed needs a mattress that bends with the bed sections. For patients in bed most of the day, ask the doctor or nurse about pressure-relief options to help prevent bed sores. See our hospital bed mattress.
Room and doorway size
Measure the room, the doorways and the lift or stairs. Leave space on at least one side of the bed for the carer, and ideally on both sides.
Accessories
An IV pole, an overbed table and a commode chair are often needed with a hospital bed. Ask us what you need.

Caring for a patient in a hospital bed
- Keep the bed at its lowest height when the carer is not working, with the rails up.
- Change the patient’s position regularly, as the doctor or nurse advises, to help prevent bed sores.
- Raise the back for meals and for at least 30 minutes after eating, unless the doctor says otherwise.

Can you deliver a bed outside Dhaka?
Yes, anywhere in Bangladesh for ৳2,500. Outside Dhaka the bed is sent by transport service, and we guide you on assembly by phone.
Is a used bed a good idea?
If the patient needs the bed for a few weeks, renting in Dhaka is usually better value than buying used.
