The right wheelchair gives a patient back their independence and makes life easier for the family. The wrong one can be uncomfortable, unsafe or too heavy to use. This guide covers the main types sold in Bangladesh and what to check before you buy.
In short
- For occasional use and hospital visits, a standard folding wheelchair is usually enough.
- If toilet transfers are difficult, a commode wheelchair saves effort and reduces falls.
- For patients who cannot sit upright for long, choose a reclining wheelchair. For independent travel with good hand control, consider an electric wheelchair.
Types of wheelchair
- Standard folding wheelchair: large rear wheels let the user push themselves, and it folds for car travel. See the standard folding wheelchair.
- Commode wheelchair: has a built-in toilet seat with a removable pan.
- Reclining wheelchair: a high back that reclines, elevating leg rests and head support for stroke, spinal or very weak patients.
- Electric wheelchair: battery powered, driven with a joystick. See the folding electric wheelchair.
What to check before you buy
Seat width and user weight
The user should sit with a little space on each side of the hips. Check the maximum user weight for the model.
Who will push it
If a carer will push most of the time, look at the push handles and the weight of the chair. If the user will push, large rear wheels with hand rims are needed.
Brakes and footrests
Check the brakes lock firmly, and that footrests swing away or lift for transfers.
Folding and storage
Measure the car boot and the space at home. Folding frames help in small flats and lifts.
Cushion
Users who sit for many hours need a pressure-relief cushion. Ask the doctor or physiotherapist.
Electric wheelchair battery
Ask about the battery type, how long a charge lasts, and charging during load-shedding.
