A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is the standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It blows a steady stream of air through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep. Choosing the right machine and mask makes the difference between a patient who uses it every night and one who gives up.
In short
- You need a sleep study and a doctor’s prescription first. The prescription gives the pressure or pressure range.
- An auto CPAP adjusts the pressure through the night and is the most popular choice today.
- A heated humidifier helps in air-conditioned rooms and dry seasons. The mask matters as much as the machine.
Auto CPAP or fixed CPAP?
A fixed CPAP gives one pressure all night. An auto CPAP (also called APAP or AutoSet) senses breathing and raises or lowers the pressure within a range set by the doctor. Most patients find auto CPAP more comfortable. All the CPAP machines Sed Bangla sells are auto machines with a pressure range of 4 to 20 cmH2O.
CPAP or BiPAP?
CPAP gives one pressure for breathing in and out. A BiPAP machine gives a higher pressure when breathing in and a lower one when breathing out. BiPAP is used when CPAP pressure is too high to tolerate, and for COPD and other breathing problems. Follow the doctor’s prescription.
What to check before you buy
Pressure range and comfort features
Check the machine covers the prescribed pressure. Expiratory pressure relief (EPR on ResMed) lowers the pressure slightly as you breathe out, and a ramp starts at a low pressure while you fall asleep.
Humidifier
A heated humidifier stops a dry mouth, nose and throat. Use distilled water and empty the tank every morning.
Mask
Nasal pillows, nasal masks and full face masks suit different patients. Mouth breathers usually need a full face mask. Ask us to help with size and type; masks cannot be returned once opened, for hygiene reasons.
Therapy data
Machines like the ResMed AirSense 10 and AirSense 11 record usage and leak data your doctor can review.
Power
CPAP machines use little power, but protect them with a voltage stabiliser or IPS. Running the heated humidifier uses more power.

Getting used to CPAP
- Wear the mask for short periods while awake to get used to it.
- Use the ramp and pressure relief settings the doctor allows.
- Wash the mask cushion daily and the tubing weekly, and replace them regularly.
- If the mask leaks or hurts, the size or type is probably wrong. Call us.
Frequently asked questions
Is ResMed better than BMC?
ResMed is the premium brand, with quieter machines and detailed therapy data. BMC machines cost much less and are widely used in Bangladesh. Both treat sleep apnea when set correctly.
Can I use a CPAP machine without a sleep study?
We strongly advise a sleep study and a doctor’s prescription before starting CPAP.
